The History of the Min-Aqua Bats
The longest standing show ski team ever is the Min-Aqua Bats from Minocqua, Wisconsin. Our conversation today is with Duke Hillinger, a member of the club for decades, and covers the history and legacy of the Min-Aqua Bats. The club started in 1945 after the end of World War II when a group of skiers decided to celebrate by skiing on the first day of peace. The Min-Aqua Bats became the first amateur water ski show in the world and the second show after Cypress Gardens. The conversation also touches on notable skiers such as Lynn Novakofski and Tom and Janie Dorwin, community support, and the unique acts performed in the ski shows. Over the years, famous guests such as President Eisenhower and Elizabeth Taylor frequented the show. The club has produced many talented skiers over the years who have gone on to compete at the collegiate and professional levels. While the club has evolved over the years, with a younger membership and a focus on show skiing rather than three-event skiing, the sense of camaraderie and dedication to putting on a great show remains strong. The Min-Aqua Bats perform shows on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from Flag Day to Labor Day.
